The little birds...

If you watch little birds you will see they are busy and happy! Using whatever they can find they create the most gorgeous little nest.
I would be the little bird with some glittery thread in her nest!
We can be like this. Happily working away with the things that are available to us to create a beautiful and happy home.
All the while with a little song in our heart.

The Christmas Challenge. Show and tell for January.

We got off to a really good start for the year! January is the time to replenish our gift cupboards!
Last week I forgot to say it is time for show and tell but some of you just knew to go right ahead and send me your photos, thank you!  We will have part two next week so I will give my email address at the end of this post as I should have last week!

First we have Tarin. She made a dream catcher for a friend. She had everything on hand and stuck to neutral clouds as this is what her friend likes. I think it turned out beautifully.

Then she made a gift for her Mother in Law who has a beach themed living room plus she is a lady who appreciates handmade gifts. I think she would have loved this!

Tarin also mentioned the joy of having a day off, turning on some music and getting creative. That is so much fun and this is the way to get the gift cupboard stocked back up! Thank you Tarin these gifts are just lovely.

Melissa K has been busy making bath bags and soaps....

So pretty and I am imagining smell beautiful!

And gorgeous cards...

Beautiful Mel. I must get card making again. I have supplies I just need to sit down with them and create. I love yours. Cards are worth at least $8 each here. They are expensive! A whole stash of lovely cards to se all year is a huge saving. Yours are stunning.

Jane hit the ground running and made lots!

Jane made a new kitchen mat, Kombucha with a cover she made, knitted dish cloths and Minion pillows and bunting for her daughter.

Here we have scrolls, an iPad holder on the back of a car seat... so her Granddaughter has a travelling screen to entertain her on long trips. (genius)
Food covers/bowl covers.... I need these especially for all my sour dough bowls!
And a new and beautiful lining for her pram!
Jane you are a blessing to your family! What a help to your daughter in law you are.  What a good start to the year!

Rachel had great success finding some beautiful yarn in an op shop!

I cant wait to see what this becomes. The beauty of fine thread is it goes so far.

She has been making preserves. I love the packaging Rachel! And your photo!

Cookie has been painting jars. This is an example of taking something ordinary and making it beautiful!

Her idea is to use them to give bath salts and other gifts. However I would be happy with just the jar!

I love these so much. I know I have a thing for jars but I keep looking at these...
For the painting challenged I am thinking how a decal/ transfer could make over a jar maybe.  But these are a stunning gift in themselves. Thank you Cookie!

January really got off to a good start!  And today is February 1! I am hoping to have a wonderful February and get so much done this month.
Tomorrow we are welcoming a new baby into the family so that is about all I can think about!
Prayers are welcome. I get anxious about now and take nothing for granted.

Next week we will have part 2 of Show and Tell. My email address is  or you can post pictures on the Bluebirds Facebook page.
No thinking "my craft work isn't good enough" type thoughts. Yes it is. If you are learning a new skill I love to see, it can be something you are working on but is not yet finished, that's ok.
It can be supplies you have, cooking, it could be your newly organised craft space!
We are working together to make our gifts, build up the present cupboard and save a lot of money this year, especially in December, but all through the year as well.
Thank you to everyone for the beautiful photos in this post!

I hope your week is going well! What do you hope to make in the new month?
Even making a few items per month will see you have wonderful supplies by Christmas.  That is the power of little things adding up!

  1. Hi Annabel and friends! What a showcase as always. I'm loving the ideas and inspiration, of course :) I had a crazy January so alas have nothing to share, but I'll be back to it with a vengeance in February. For now I'm enjoying the pretty photos. Thankyou to all for sharing your beautiful work. The year is off to a flying start by the look of things! Love, Mimi xxx

    1. Dear Mimi, Thank you! I cant wait to see what you are making this year! I seem to have beauty and kitchen themes going here so far.
      Many thanks! With love

  2. There is very beautiful work here I love everything! you can really tell the thought behind each item. Good job ladies! Annabel I will keep Lucy in my prayers and I am getting an Aussie baby for my birthday!

    1. Dear Vicky,
I hope you appreciate the amount of trouble Lucy went to in order to have the baby on your Birthday. Pretty clever hey!
      You can be Aunty Vicky.
We have got off to a good start with beautiful gifts and lots of work! Lots more to come next week! With love,

    2. Happy Birthday, Vicky, and many, many more to come. Cookie

    3. Happy birthday, Vicky!
      Love, Kelsey

    4. A very Happy Birthday, Vicky, and many, many more. Cookie

  3. I will be praying for Lucy, Annabel. How exciting for you and your family. Grandchildren bring so much joy to our lives.

  4. Hi Annabel,

Praying that Lucy's delivery goes well and all are in good health.

Beautiful gifts from everyone as usual. No gifts here for January as we enjoyed a visit from our daughter (she lives overseas), plus celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary with a family holiday which included our children and grandchildren. As Jane would say "life is good".

Hoping to get back into gift making now that the oppressive heat of the past few days has eased a little.

  5. That beautiful green bottle would easily find a place in my home. Beautiful preserves, pamper products, cards, painted glasswear and a tease of what could be made from beautiful thread. We produce such a diverse array of gifts within this group. I love the show and tell weeks and seeing the clever things being made.
My making for January was all based around my Granddaughter and her parents. I only had them for two weeks but I enjoyed every minute of it. This month has started with my making a gift for a friend and her Granddaughter.
I know we've only just finished January but so far everything has come from my 'use it up' year pledge.
Tomorrow we have a new baby bluebird. This is so exciting!!!!
Life is really, really, really good.

  6. Agree with other commenters everyone's makes are just lovely! Well done everyone ,a great start to this years gifts.
Annabel-Im sending the best positive vibes for Lucy tomorrow and safe arrival of her baby. And calm vibes for you , love Maria xoxoxo

  7. A new baby❤ How wonderful!
I didn't really make any gifts in January but since this is a new month, it's time to set a new goal. Thank you for the reminder.
Hugs to you Annabel and I hope you lots of time to enjoy your grands.

  8. Hi Annabel and beautiful bluebirds!

Whilst out shopping, my husband called in to a store that sells computers, and I had a sneak peek at this show while we were there! All the while, though, I am thinking how relieved so many will be when your newest grandchild has arrived safely! May the God of Jacob support the cause of your grandchild!

Tarin, your photos are clear, and they show a beautifully resourceful creativity that is aimed at the tastes of the recipients! Nice job!! Welcome aboard the bluebird train!

Mel K, your cards are beautifully lacy and sparkly! Your soap and bath bags look luxurious! I'd love to smell them, too!!

Jane, you've done it again!! You keep chugging away along the tracks of family life, producing such useful gifts that help to make the world go round! I am particularly interested in your kitchen mat, and your apple and cinnamon scrolls must have been scrumptious!

Cookie, my husband says that you are talented! I consider your work to be exquisitely beautiful! I love the lacy doily effect as the painted background, and your roses, pansies and other flowers are wonderful!! I love your photos, too!! I feel like I have a million questions to ask. Would you consider teaching bluebird classes? (asks 'blog secretary'!) .. Seriously!!!!

    I love the show!

    With very warm regards,
    Rachel Holt

  9. Dear Annabel,
Lucy and the family are in my prayers! How exciting!
I love seeing what everyone has made. I am inspired by Melissa's cards, and though I can't paint, I love Cookie's jars! Jane, I'm thinking your use it up challenge is coming along well, too. You have been so busy! Tarin, your crafting day sounds like a lot of fun. I'm sure your friend and MIL loved their thoughtful, personalized gifts. Rachel, please don't keep us in suspense too long! Your gifts are always delightful, as are your photographs. Your jars of preserves look delicious, and you did such a lovely job of decorating them.
Well, I haven't done any crafting, but I am organizing my supplies. I am moving them all out of the spare room so I can turn it into a nursery! I am relocating everything to the upstairs loft, and that will be my new sewing and crafting area. I know having it up a flight of stairs is not ideal, especially as I get bigger, but it's what I have to work with. After sorting through things and telling myself I definitely didn't need more cardstock, I went to the craft store and bought more cardstock lol. I guess I am not as disciplined as Jane! But is was floral and on sale, and I had a coupon plus a cash back rebate! And my husband was right beside me telling me I should buy it (yes, really)! So I gave in :) Perhaps it will be in next month's show and tell!
I hope everyone is doing well!
    With love, Kelsey

    1. Kelsey,
It was so good to hear from you. I'm looking forward to seeing some cards next month. Blessings, Cookie

  10. Thank you, Rachel! I had so much fun crafting with others in mind! My husband thinks I'm crazy, as I haven't been letting him throw anything away! Every jar and plastic tub is being saved! I keep thinking, I could paint that and use it to wrap a gift in! Baked goods, bath products, ect ... all for free! I love repurposing!

I think I shared on a previous post that this past Christmas I spent DOUBLE what I had budgeted for gifts. I'm determined not to let that happen this year! Plus, I'm hoping to have handmade gifts on hand for birthdays, teacher gifts, ect. throughout the year. I have three extra days off from work in February, so that gives me lots of time for crafting!

Those glass jars and painted beautifully! I would love to see how it was done!

  11. What a lovely week Bluebirds! So much talent. I love that so many are off to a running start. The sun is shinning today and the gray weather has lifted. I welcome the new month. Lucy and her precious little one are in my prays for a safe and seamless
birth. That it would be beautiful and perfect in every way. I pray that God would give you perfect peace Annabel. Sending a great big hug for everyone.

  12. Blessings across the Pacific for the new baby.

Love everyone's creating. I'm finally feeling well enough to do something easy so I've started embroidering this year's flour sack towels. My first set is vegetables. Carrots on one and peas on the other.

I also finished an embroidered quilt square for my church quilting group.

I might poach the jar idea. I think they'd be lovely with some seasoned nuts in them for a gift. Like candied pecans...YUM!! Even for a boy. Maybe a school logo/sport/comic theme with some trail mix. A healthy homework snack! Yes, I have some boys in mind lol.

    1. Dear Debby,
I hope you'll share the flour sack towels with us when you finish them! I love flour sack towels and embroidery.
I think your candied pecan gift will be a hit. I did this for my FIL's birthday last year and he loved it. It's a good man/boy gift.
      Love, Kelsey

    2. I'll see if my husband can teach me how to do a picture. I'm pretty computer basic.

  13. Praying for a safe and easy delivery and a healthy new grandchild to love. Hugs to you all!

( I know what you mean about worry. I was my daughter's labor coach for her two and I could hardly breathe the entire time.)

  14. Dear Annabel,
Lucy, the new baby and you, Annabel are in my prayers.

Technology never ceases to amaze me in that we can come together from all parts of the world and share our lives and what we are creating by just a click.

Tarin, the dream catcher is amazing and the bottle for your MIL would find a place here. Did you fashion the starfish?

Mel K., your cards are just beautiful as are the bath soaks.

Jane, all I can say is WOW. So many incredible things made from your stash. I'm in love with the bowl covers and the rug.

Rachel, as always I marvel at your photography and how you set up a shot. The jars of preserves are so beautifully decorated and the backdrop for them is wonderful.

Annabel, thank you for putting my repurposed jars in today's show and tell. I wasn't sure whether I got the pictures to you in time.
And thank you all for your kind comments about them. Blessings, Cookie

    1. Thank you, Cookie! Yes, I hot glued the starfish on the burlap. I'm thinking I may fill the bottle with some bath salts, as she takes baths often! I still have some corks I could put back in the bottle.

  15. Beautiful work by everyone! The painted effect on the jars is wonderful!

I am biting my nails and waiting for news!

    xxx Jen in NS

  16. Dear Annabel, There's a lot of talented ladies here in the Bluebird group! I love it all!! :)
    Love, Teri

  17. What lovely gifts everyone is sharing! I love seeing everyone's craftiness! Cookie, your painting talent is amazing!

Annabel, I am late to the table, but I am praying that Lucy and the new baby are doing well!

I haven't been getting too much done at home, other than my normal doings, and work has been quite busy, but I'm hoping to get started on my gifts this weekend. I'm on hat #3 for my girlfriend that has ovarian cancer.

  18. Well done, ladies! Beautiful.

  19. Cookie should sell those on etsy - imagine a set of big jars for storing flour sugar and rice etc... They are just so lovely !! Regards Julie D Pilbara WA

  20. Once again the talented ladies at Bluebirds have a beautiful collection of work to share. Those jars! Oh, my goodness! I wish I had the talent to paint like that!
    Blessings, Leigh

  21. Loved all the beautiful gifts this month ladies. Jane could you please tell me what size knitting needles you used for the cloths and also the yarn used and its name? I would love to have a go at some.
