The little birds...

If you watch little birds you will see they are busy and happy! Using whatever they can find they create the most gorgeous little nest.
I would be the little bird with some glittery thread in her nest!
We can be like this. Happily working away with the things that are available to us to create a beautiful and happy home.
All the while with a little song in our heart.

Feather your Nest Friday, 26 May, 2017.

It has been a really good week!  Today is beautiful and sunny and a perfect Autumn day.  We are only a few days away from the first day of winter.

The bathroom is almost finished!  I will give you a peek because we still have a cabinet and a mirror to put up and I have the door and door frame to paint which I will do today.  Then it is just finishing touches!   My shelves are almost set up... I am waiting on a few baskets still to go into these but I have some of my supplies organised...

The bins are full of shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste etc...

They are a good size. The toothpaste one has over thirty tubes of toothpaste in it.  I followed Rosanne's advice and removed packaging.  It is true that saves a lot of space!   Now I know exactly how many I have on hand.  Before I had them stashed in several places!
When my baskets arrive I will have more categories organised!

There is space for all my towels, hand towels etc...

And I have been loving the bath!  In my "new bathroom Glory Box" I had bath soaks I had made with essential oils, bubble bath etc.  So this is where you find me before bedtime!

It was five weeks of mess and work. The whole house was really a mess as there were boxes everywhere!  But after the weekend it will be finished!

Yesterday I finished the wall painting.  I am counting that in my Vicky Challenge this week.  The savings from doing the bathroom ourselves I am also counting eventually when I work out the exact amount.  From quotes we got to the amount we actually spent I know we saved at least $8000. (going from the cheapest quote, not the most expensive one)

During the week I made Cheese and Vegemite scrolls.

I still feel victorious when I have dough rising and looking like this!

These are $4 each in our local bakery.  That is $48 a tray!  This means I save about $45 per tray! This is the power of cooking!

Thank you to everyone who wrote re the sour dough starter.  Tomorrow I am drying the starter I have out now which is really good, strong and bubbly!  It will be fired up ready to go when you get it!  I haven't replied to everyone as I really ran out of time. I have your envelopes addressed and ready to go!  If you are in the US expect it in about two weeks as ten days seems to be the usual time to get something there.  Meanwhile get things ready like your bread flour/bakers flour, honey, etc.

Tomorrow I am trying Raisin Bread to cut up for raisin toast!  If that works out I will post the recipe also.  This week I found two lovely loaf tins at Aldi. Perfect!

I made a big picnic for the boys fishing trip.

I spent a lot of time cleaning up and organising. I have heaps to go!  And I had the washing out in the sun while we have this weather!

Today I will get this door and frame painted.  It will be kind of satisfying as both need painting and are a dingy yellowish cream. They will be glossy white so will look suddenly clean and bright!  Painting works like a miracle in this way!

Looking back over the week does me a world of good!  I knew I felt happy after getting the walls done yesterday! I can see how far we have come!  I am so pleased with our progress!

I hope you had a good week too! How did you build up your nest, get ahead or save?
Have a wonderful weekend! xxx

  1. Annabel, your bathroom is looking very pretty and look at all the money you've saved by doing most of it yourselves! That's a good idea to remove the packaging from the toothpaste tubes, that would save alot of storage space. Your bins look so neat and clean. You've really done a good job!

Today my baskets came! So I am back at sorting and organising. This is good fun and making a big difference. Everything has a domino effect don't you notice when moving things in the house?

  2. Sensational Annabel, that bath looks sensational!!!

All your gorgeous crochet on lovely white linen is beautiful. Would it be alright if I came over for a bath lol.

The power of stockpiling is awesome isn't it? I still have toothpaste from about seven years or more ago. It's perfect still. Unopened it seems to have an indefinite life. I have two tubes left. Then I will start again.

Off to work shortly. Have a great weekend. Fi xx

  4. Oh my goodness Annabel, your bathroom organisation is fabulous! I am suffering from storage envy lol. I generally hate painting door frames and windows etc, but what an amazing difference they make. It really finishes a room off. Congratulations on finishing such a big renovation, and doing so much yourselves. I am thrilled you can have a luxurious bath to reward yourself!

Funny, I have vegemite scrolls rising on my bench right now! And I also made some with butter and golden syrup melted together, and sprinkled with a little brown sugar, cinnamon and sultanas. I'll let you know how they go, I was planning to make sticky buns but didn't have enough golden syrup.

It's my daughters birthday next week, so this weekend I have some sewing to finish up and a unicorn cake to make!

Hope the last of the bathroom jobs go well, have a great weekend.

  6. Five weeks without a bathroom would have tested the best of us. Having such a beautiful room to relax and rejuvenate in will be an absolute blessing. So much hard work is so worthwhile.
Our week has included quite a lot of work in the garden, delicious treats being baked in the kitchen and using up fabrics to make our Tilly some clothes for her First Birthday.
Bluey and I are currently planning on making an air drying cupboard for our garden produce. We are also looking at making a solar dehydrator using a very simple plan I found in a book from the Library. Bluey has a list of things he is looking out for at the tip. It is good to see him showing interest once more.
Barb W I took your idea of potting up some of my bromeliad pups as a gift idea. I have 10 broms potted up, These are going to be put aside as gifts for the coming year. Right now these 10 plants would cost over $100 to purchase at the Nursery. I also potted up 10 succulents. The cheapest of these is $7 at the local nursery.
We were gifted a bag of mandarins, 5 avocados, half a pumpkin and two loaves of grain bread. The savings this week has been pretty generous.
    Life is good.

    1. Dear Jane,
How exciting to be almost up to the first birthday! The clothes you make are just beautiful.
Tania on Outback Tania showed a dryer her husband made... it is excellent and huge! It is a great idea. I am sure Bluey will come up with something amazing. I would do this... as we have the heat and I don't want to use electricity to be drying things. I had an electric drier but it was running three days to dry anything well and the electric cost is too much.
The Bromeliads will be wonderful gifts! Nursery prices are so expensive!
All your cooking and produce really made it a wonderful week! Not to mention the sewing! Have another good week! With love Annabel.xxx

  7. Annabel there is no way we could go without a bathroom for that long. Goodness me it sounds like Gertrude is going to get jet lag with all that travelling. We have been having days up to 25C so I took the opportunity to dry some more sourdough starter as I take some to our simple living group and it is good to have a backup as well. You have had a most productive week. Well done!

    1. Dear Nanna Chel,
We didn't have much choice but we did have a partial bathroom for some of it and three weeks with no bathroom! We have a spare toilet thankfully! And we used Mums house which is a street away for showers etc. We are lucky we could do that but it wasnt easy!
I have sour dough starter drying across the whole dining room table! Today I am packaging up another ten! So Gertrude is truly global! I keep backup too. I think I have several lots now just incase... I never want to lose this wonderful starter! I guess if either of us did we have the other to help re start! At least we would know it is still Gertrude!
I tried raisin bread yesterday and it was pretty good! I will add more fruit next time though.

Your bathroom is beautiful, it looks like something out of a Vogue Living magazine. I'm sure you'll enjoy a nice soaking bubblebath after all the painting.

I thought I'd commented on the gifts on Wednesday, but obviously got so engrossed in the photographs, anyway, I just wanted to say how lovely and varied the items and so many ideas. There's definitely something for everyone.

  9. Dear Annabel, thank you for another lovely blog post , I love Fridays feather your nest posts as we get a glimpse into each others lives and can share our bargain finds with each other . This week has been a good week for my Vicky challenge . I shopped at Aldi today and bought two pieces of their bargain buys of the week enamel bakeware, as well as some groceries. My savings on the bakeware alone compared to kitchen shops would be $ 80 easily( $40 saving per item is a conservative guess ) . I saved approximately $40 on groceries at Aldi and $33 on groceries at Woolworths , I banked some of this money.
I was given some mandarins , lemons and shallots from my parents garden and some homemade chocolate chip biscuits / cookies made by mum.i also received 2 meals from my parents , total savings on items from my parents about $40 .
I bought two good t- shirts from my favourite clothing store ( on sale) saved $80 off ticketed prices for both. I bought a few gifts in the after Mother's Day markdowns and saved $25 . Also, I saved $8 by not buying my usual magazines . I also went out to afternoon tea with my mum and went to get my purse out and my mum insisted she pay , saving me $9 . Subsidised cleaning $40 saving, subsidised meal prep time( using my food) $30 savings . Transport by Dad $40 savings . I have saved $ 425 this week in total . Annabel , I love your new bathroom, very luxurious , I hope you enjoy relaxing in it .happy weekend to everyone love Barb W.

  10. Just gorgeous! I love the bathmat - did you do the crocheted edge? It's so pretty. I know from quotes to get our bathroom and ensuite done that $8,000 is a very conservative estimate, I'm sure you've saved a lot more and have a much nicer finish to the job. Enjoy your soaks each night :)

    1. Dear Cath, My SIL gave me that bathmat on the floor. From that I got the idea to do bathmats! The one over the edge of the bath is also a bathmat. I copied the pattern from the bought one as it is quite a few rows but easy to do. I love it! Thinking about this I need to get going on some more of these!
The bathroom is quite big and if we removed all the tiles they would have taken out two whole walls. Plus the spa coming out etc it was quite a lot of destruction. We were quoted between $15000 and $25000. These figures are also considered average in SA. There was just no way! I still feel like we spent a lot but it needed to be done and more than we thought too as when the spa came out there was water underneath and all kinds of mess. So its a relief. I am having a clean up day to try and get back to normal! Have a lovely Sunday! With love, Annabel.xxx

Your new bathroom looks absolutely beautiful! I envy so much storage space! I love your beautiful bath linens! What an accomplishment to have done this yourselves!

It has been cool and raining here off and on so all gardening plans got cancelled. However in-between the rain drops I cut roses to dry and have a bowl of rose petals drying as well. I've also become addicted to making no sew ribbon roses with odds and ends of ribbons from my stash. Removed buttons and lace from things no longer used to add to my trim stash. Made a few meals for the freezer.

Enjoy your soaks in your beautiful new tub and bathroom. Wishing everyone a beautiful weekend. Blessings, Cookie

Scrolls look good as usual, you've been very busy homemaking and painting. Painting has stopped here untill the half half gets some repair work done.
I think our upstairs bathroom will be the next big job, but I think DH is still recovering form the outside paint, repair and roof jobs.
This week has been quieter as I got over the face pain and slowly each day got improvement just the odd twinge now .Freezer meals came in handy too ,as well I made 3 smallish cakes over the week, for hubby's lunchbox and family that popped in,and helped our daughter with washing and grandchildren.Moved our bedroom tables around and tidied my things and makeup etc and DHs wardrobe side floor. So really its been a this and that sort of week.
Tomorrow I need to tidy my sides floor and go through my clothes again for this colder weather , hubby is working so have the day free.

  14. Annabel,
Your Bath is simply Spectacular. Our baths are so small you couldn't fit your shelving into one of them, and the tub, oh how I can imagine it as a wonderful retreat.
I do have to say, I love your storage tins, I had to laugh though, after telling you to get rid of packaging I was doing the same in my organizing this week and thought of you and your toothpaste.

What is Vegemite? We have nothing called that up in the Northeast US.

I am still working on one section of our basement pantry, it is daunting to say the least. I have changed out all of the spices into old quart mayonnaise jars, I thought I would never run out of them, but I did. All look so nice sitting together. To say some more money I covered cardboard boxes that clementines came in that are cheap wood, and the small 1/2 boxes that canning jars come in.
As much work as this is taking and I know it will be weeks on end, I want to go through my whole basement and redo it. Clean, Organize, Catagorize, Purge. I filled our trash can and recycle can this week with more to add.

I looked at my canning kettle that was dented and starting to rust. I think I deserve a new stainless steel one for all the work I am doing, don't you think?

I am so happy for you having a new bathroom to enjoy and all the money you saved doing a lot of work yourselves.

  19. Oh, your bathroom looks wonderful! I always find it amazing how a small plant can add so much. And your linens!! Beautiful!

I'm in a nest-purging way. I've been tossing, donating, etc. It's a wonder how much stuff we have that we don't use or even want anymore. I actually have space on my bookshelves! Can't remember the last time, if ever, that happened.

I sewed my doggy a new summer bed with cotton instead of fleece. He's a hairy little beast and I'm sure he'll be much happier. And it even matches our quilt!!

I'm sewing a couple of scrap quilts to donate this winter. Quilts are amazing. Even with a bunch of different fabrics, when they're all put together, they always look so cozy and nice.

What I really need to get on is my Christmas stuff. It's almost June and December will be here before we know it. It always seems to me that once school starts again, Christmas is at its heels. I'm spending my afternoon down in my craft room so I should start making some C'mas notes and start making some cards.....

My savings this week are mostly from cooking at home and painting a long, double-sided bookcase sparkling white. Three coats of paint later, it looks brighter (it was very dark wood before) and is much like a blank canvas for displaying my collection of covered storage boxes with a definite floral and Paris theme. Mimi would approve, I think... Love to all! Teresa

I have heard people pay thousands to move but when you are going a short distance bring a truck or a trailer and doing it yourselves (rope family in) is pretty easy and hopefully a few hundred dollars at most. Our last move was only a couple of suburbs. My uncle did the same and paid something like $3000 and seemed dumbfounded when we said it cost us $500. The savings can buy your freezer! haha!

  23. Dear Annabel and Beautiful Bluebirds!!

Ahhhh, at last! The bathroom is working! This is a fine example of how to plan, prepare and work through a major accomplishment! I love the 'bathroom glory box' concept, and the beautifully crocheted towels! I can't help thinking that the brown towels are for grubbier bathers!

The satisfaction of home baking sure is worthwhile, and it all becomes so easy!! The dog is hooked on Aussie Mite!!

We have a friendly small-town supermarket that orders canned goods on special for us, and then holds them until we next travel that way! In this way, my husband enjoys topping up his pantry. We have a 20kg bag of South Australian onions in the 'boat box' outdoors. My husband reckons that, if they come from Annabel's state, they must be alright! Also, having packed onions before, we know that 20kg is the minimum weight .... so extra value!! Potatoes are not cheap enough yet!

I broke up what must have been a gun fight in the cupboard, and put the vigorously shooting Aussie-grown garlic into the ground recently. It's taking off well!! I've also been weeding the spring garden that wasn't! The few carrot leaves that had been chewed back to skeleton status are now growing! Along with a few other stragglers, I am hoping for seed! I am learning -- if there is no fruit on the trees, look at uses for the leaves! If it is too dry for the garden to grow, watch for some seed!!

    With warm regards,
    Rachel Holt

Gardening is a battle of the elements that is for sure. Also making the most of crops when you do get them and I know you do this.
I am making the most of sun, it was meant to be raining today but not so far... and I have Andys work clothes to get done so they are out now in perfect sunshine. So if I beat the rain I will be pretty pleased with myself!

    1. Thanks Vicky! Today I am having a tidy up the house dayton try and get back to normal. Mind you my spare room needs major thought. It is the room I put everything that I don't know where to put!
Now we just have to get your pantry room finished. But you have been doing two rooms and one of them is finished so that is a lot.
Lets have a really good new week! With lots of love, Annabel.xxx

  28. Dear New Bathroom
I find you were so amazing to inspire Annabelle and family how to fix your tired, over used area. You knew that you could still be good use for a long, long time.

I love how you picked out the vanity, that you knew they would cherish. It is so good that you knew you needed new areas for your family to store things.

Thank you for inspiring Annabelle to crochet all those beautiful towels and bath mats. New bathroom, I think you are going to feel so refreshed for a long time to come.

Thank you for inspiring the rest of us. I know you are not quite finished yet, but new bathroom, I just know you will treat your family with kindness with all you beautiful new items.
