Feather your Nest Friday, 21 February, 2020.

It has been a huge week!  I sound happy as I am home... but we had two nights away in Adelaide.  It was good in that we did so much in a short space of time.  I figured if I have to go then I will take the opportunity to do some stocking up and get appointments and so on out of the way for a good while.
Mainly I didn't want to leave and when I was there mainly I just wanted to come home!
I guess it is a good sign that I love it here so much I just want to hurry and get back!

Chloe came over to check on everything, feed everyone and water.   She said Eddie came running up to her but then when he got really close he stopped dead and looked at her in a "you're not my Mum" glare.  Then the calves came running and they did the same... they got close then stopped and wouldn't come any closer!   Maybe from a distance we look alike?  Well, they were not having any of it!  Another blonde in a cardigan is not enough to fool them!

When I got home I called Laffie and she ran over the hill so fast and galloped down to the fence.  I wish I had my phone to film that!  But last night I filmed a less excited version.  She is very good at coming when she is called.  I am going to post the video on Bluebirds Facebook page and The Tuesday Afternoon Club.  Not that it has anything to do with craft!

Some of the ways I got ahead this week were:

I did a big stock up shop at Aldi.  It has taken a while to break up the meat packs and divide them into meal portions and get them all in the freezer.  But this gets so many meals ready.  Some things at Aldi are so much cheaper than in the county towns.  I do plenty to support my local towns but sometimes you need to stock up and save!

I also added three roasts to the freezer that were a fantastic price.

I had so much op shop success.  On the day we arrived we went to two different op shops.  While Andy found books I found the cotton waffle weave fabric I have been wanting to make kitchen towels and cleaning cloths.  Also a box of bottles.  The next two days we went to another few op shops including a favourite one on the way home.  I got so much for the cottage!!  I have two beds,  two as new mattresses, kitchen crockery, implements, glassware, mugs and cups... pretty much everything.   I buy all white crockery so then everything matches.  But I made an exception for these cups and saucers as they go with the cottage nature theme so well...

I have a set of six and each one has different birds.  Imagine them on the cottage dark wooden table.

So one bedroom and the kitchen is stocked (except for a fridge) for about $200.   The beds are old wooden and lovely dark wood which kind of matches the dining set.  They were $20 each!  Also a fourth mattress protector so now the four cottage beds all have one.
What else did I get?  A dress I love in a favourite brand ($5) A brand new white bath sheet,  a set of pure cotton as new king size bed sheets, Elsa games and puzzles for the girls,  a 3 m length of pale blue cotton fabric.   As op shopping goes this was just about a personal best! Two rooms of the cottage are basically supplied now.

On my days at home I continued to sew a bit each day.  I made produce bags and keep lettuce, ham etc fresh in the fridge bags.  Some are for myself and some are for gifts.   I can't stop making these it seems!

The little chickens and lambs are so cheerful to me.

I made another set with calico and lovely little animal panels and braid I had in the cupboard..

I came home from the city having cleaned out Mum's pantry of stale cereals and so forth.  I brought it all home for the animals.   The chicken and ducks had the cereals.  Scout got half a hamburger I could not eat!  The calves, goat and lambs got serval packets of biscuits!  You know how they love biscuits!

In the garden I added a Bay Leaf tree, Rosemary and Broccoli.

Preparedness wise we added a small fire proof safe.  After evacuating in the fires I realised if documents were kept in a safe this would be one less thing to worry about and wise anyway for the really important stuff.

Yesterday was spent unpacking, loads of washing the linens and fabrics I found.  In between I kept going to say hello to the animals.  Everyone has had their noses rubbed a hundred times!

So it was a wonderful week.  I really did get ahead in many ways and I feel the cottage project is going well.  We also have mild weather.  This has helped the garden and animals too.  Dad tells me that the apples on the big old tree should be ready in a couple of weeks.  I have many plans for them!

How did you build up your home this week!?
Tomorrow we have The Vicky Challenge so I will also see you then! xxx

I worked out how to add a video!

  1. Those cups and saucers are divine! I would have snatched them up in an instant! I love that you have stocked the cottage for little. What a blessing!

We had to settle back in from our week at the lake and then I had a day that was dental work and I am still on the mend. Today it has been snowing but not sticking so we just had the pretty part of watching it come down. We have been staying on out of the cold and enjoying lovely classical music as we go about our days.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  2. Sounds like you had another very productive week. Mine has been slower, between working and 3 days of migraine all I have done is batch cook some meals for the freezer and slice some reduced peppers for the freezer. The only time I ventured near a charity shop I bought myself a lovely waterfall cardigan in burgundy, which is a good colour for me, that cost me a whole £1. I have also done a wardrobe audit and tidy up as I feel I should smarten myself up a bit, this will be an ongoing process!

    1. Dear Su,
I am really sorry you had a migraine. I have had migraines since I was little, so have Mum and Lucy. Just terrible. This may not help you at all because we all have different triggers but I found out that if I have no artificial sweeteners at all (Hard, they are hidden even in yoghurts and electrolytes and vitamins etc) then I hardly ever get one. It took me years to find this out.
I love waterfall cardigans and I love burgundy! What a deal! Well done on the wardrobe work. Have a good weekend! With love Annabel.xxx

  4. Wow Annabel, that really was an impressive op shop week for you! It must be exciting finding things that you know will look great and getting them at such great prices. It's so sweet that the animals all miss you so much. I'm really excited to see the cottage transformation!

I love the bags you are making, do they have a drawstring or some closing g at the top or do you just fold them over something like a block of cheese? I think they would make really nice gifts.

I have had a mixed week, I did loads of baking early on and was feeling really ahead for the week, and then got an awful sore throat and headache, plus a sick child home one day and feel like I've just muddled through really. I'm improving today, but think a fairly low key weekend is needed. I did manage to add a Frozen bracelet to the gift cupboard for 17 cents, as well as forty Christmas crackers for 28 cents! I think this year I might try to add some little treats to the crackers to make them a bit more special.

I hope you have a nice weekend

    1. Dear Jen, Thank you! The bags to bring home produce from the supermarket I give draw strings and the ones for the fridge I just leave as I fold them over. You could also do pillowcase style I think. They really are so simple and work especially with lettuce. Don't ask me how but it just stays beautiful. I wash the lettuce first then shake off most of the water and in it goes.
It was really good that you did cook and get ahead before you got sick! I hope you can get a few quiet days to feel better again.
A Frozen Bracelet for 17c!? And the Christmas crackers!! Ok you are already ahead for Christmas 2020! Have a lovely weekend there, with love Annabel.xxx

  5. Hi, Annabelle! You are making great progress on your cottage. I believe we are alike in that I feel the best part about leaving home for a few days is the getting home part. I can't tell you how much I enjoy your animal pictures and stories. When my husband's health went downhill we had to get rid of our few cows and I miss them so much. I still find myself looking in the pasture for them. We still have our chickens and one cat and I have to be satisfied with that. Your Laffie and the goats are just a delight. I'm working on our tax return this week and that has consumed most of my time. I was able to work outside one day and then it turned cold again. Spring is on the way here though and I am ready! Have a great weekend. Looking forward to the Vicky challenge.

  6. Dear Annabel, what a beautiful post to read. Thank you for inspiring and encouraging us all. I am so excited to hear about your cottage! I am also so impressed with your finds at the op shop. How wonderful! I love how you missed the farm and the animals missed you. It sounds like such a relaxing, peaceful and picturesque place! I love your oroduce bags! They are gorgeous. You make eveything look beautiful. Thank you for your mail! I am so blessed to now have one of these beautiful bags- I do not think that my lettuce has ever looked so stylish. It has been a mixed week. It has been so hot here, but today it is finally raining. The good news is that it is Friday and I am hoping for a quiet weekend with plenty of rest and rain! 7. Annabel, we built a second home about 10 years ago and I furnished it almost entirely from thrift stores for under $2,500. My goal had been $2,000, but I never found a used sofa that I wanted, and bought a new one from Costco. My very first buy had been a box of moose dishes for $4, then I added to them, a dish at a time, as found. Those cups and saucers will be perfect with white dishes.

Great job on the op shop finds! Those cups are delightful and I can just see them on a dark wood table. You are not letting any grass grow under your feet as you get ready to turn that cottage into a delightful getaway!

It was a quiet, very cold week here. Hubby is still recovering from vocal cord surgery and can't speak so I am taking advantage of the quiet and getting a lot of reading done.

I will be gone next week babysitting the three oldest grands so I have made ahead several freezer meals for him.

Finally got a 5 part blog series done and posted about how to make the most of the food you bring home. Today is a baking day - getting more things in the freezer for hubby. I haven't been shopping at all this week, so no deals to report.

What I can report though is great satisfaction in being at home, putting together delicious meals from the pantry, catching up on reading and writing, and enjoying watching the birds, squirrels and deer at the 'bird' feeder in the backyard.

  10. I just cracked up about the story of the animals stopping dead when they realized Chloe wasn't you. Too funny.

I love your produce bags...they are so cheerful!

You have such great luck at the op shops! I haven't been to any for a little while, but am hoping to get to one or two on Monday when we have to go into the big city. I have been A.W.O.L. for the last week, as I caught the cold the kids had, so didn't get as much done as I had hoped. I am 90% better now, though, which is good, because we have company coming for supper tomorrow night. I felt a little more energetic yesterday, so managed to get some cleaning and cooking (for the company meal) done, and when I realized I didn't have a tablecloth for our huge table that is looking a little ratty (needs a paint job), I rummaged thru my stash and found a length of fabric that only needed its sides and ends hemmed to become a tablecloth. It's very cute and will be just the thing for a nice table setting. Cost: $0! Today I will spend some money, though, as I want to get some candles and flowers.

Hoping next week I will be more productive!!

    Have a great weekend!

  13. The produce bags are so pretty. Do you line the ones for the ham, and what do you use? It would seem to me the ham would have liquid in it. I recall my mother rinsing off celery and wrapping it in a damp towel and then placing it back in the fridge, it would make it crisp again instead of limp. Do you think you could post your video of Laffie on this blog?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dear Joy, The ham bags just need to be a decent thickness cotton but if you have a pretty cotton you would want to use then it could be two layers. Celery in a bag like this will work too as when you wash it that bit of moisture dampens the bag. Thanks to you I learned how to add a video, if it works! See above! With love Annabel.xxx

  14. I found a piece of flannel multi colored fabric at the thrift shop floral but beggars can't be choosers. I need to make up some kennel pads for the stray cats I feed...The kennel pads will help keep them warm at night . I also need to make some kennel cage covers to help insulate the kennels during winter. It is so very cold and those poor animals need to be warm and safe at night and day too. I also found to large glass canister jars with a metal scoop in each. A good deal but not the best deal. I need to start back to sewing . But daughter is home for the weekend. So I am up to my eyebrows in laundry ...Goodness your op shopping sounds fabulous. I wish I could find good fabrics like you do and good bed linens. They are so super expensive here and not in good shape I can't afford to pay $12.00 US dollars for a flat sheet. These thrift stores keep raising the prices....It's insane what they charge for things these days

It is funny how we see the opportunities in op shops according to what is on our mind at the time! For you, it was the opportunity to help animals. For Annabel it was the opportunity to decorate her cottage. When I last saw an op shop, some brand new gumboots jumped out at me!! Then I saw a cow/sheep bell priced at over two hundred dollars, and simply made a quick video of the staff ringing it!!

      It’s all so much fun!

  15. Dear Annabel, what great opp shop finds! I also love your produce and fridge bags. Recently I found a babies pillow slip in the opp shop for 50 cents and have been using that for my carrots. I am really trying to reduce my plastic use so me making some produce bags is a must do really. I made 12 dish cloths this week for a friend who has asked to purchase that amount for her cousins. Our 3 year old peach tree has 30 perfect peaches on it and I am watching daily so I can preserve every little bit of them. We will eat some fresh but I will preserve the rest in my Vacola unit. 16. I love how your babies all come running for nose rubs and biccies. Our old bull used to love paddle pops(milk iceblocks on a stick) and would have the drool running down his face when he saw you coming with one.
Bluey picked up his ride on mower. Our place looks wonderful and so does the half of the street that he has been along and mowed. Our neighbours mower broke a week or two ago and they just don't have the money to get a new one. Bluey has there place looking wonderful.
The ride on mower has a grass catcher. All the grass clippings go on the pathways in my food forest. It defines the pathway and suppresses the weeds. I have a tidy garden for the first time is so long.
I have added to my medicinal pantry by making calendula and lavender healing balm. I use this on all my scrapes, bumps and itchies. The Grandies call it 'Ouchies Cream'. A new batch of Thieves Oil has also been made up. I made a new batch of luscious body butter to keep my Granny skin from drying out and looking like fish scales.
Katie and Jared had a good fishing expedition and came home with a good amount of delicious reef fish. I love that this means that we get fresh filleted fish too. We ended up having two nights in a row of fresh fish and have another four meals of fish frozen. We also have fresh frozen prawns straight off a friends trawler in the freezer. There is no more room in the freezer so we really need to eat this down a bit.
    Life is good.

You had great success at the op shops. I love those cups and saucers you got. They look like something I might be able to get Colton to drink tea out of :) I also love what you have been sewing. That farmy fabric is so sweet.
It was a slow week around here, as it has been cold and rainy. I did manage to get lots of laundry done and even hung on the line on the one sunny day before it got cold. We also had a special meal at our house for the family one night, as Papa turned 89! We enjoyed steaks (a very rare treat, purchased on sale), baked potatoes, salad, iced tea, and a homemade cake for dessert.
I've also had a secret project in the works, but that shall be revealed at a later time :)

  19. I'm enjoying seeing your beautiful handmade items, and what an amazing treasure find at the shops!!
We had a lovely, quiet week with a bit more sunshine than previously although it was still cold. I spent most of the time in the house adding to the wood stove, although I did get out a bit to go to church, the library, and to get groceries.
*Got another load of books through the inter-library loan system. I got some fiction ones this time to change up the nonfiction and also got a set of the old Murder, She Wrote movies on DVD. So fun and relaxing to watch those! My 14yo daughter also started using this service for her fictional reading. I’m excited this will save us $25 per year by not purchasing a membership at the larger library in the next town :)
*My frugal fail for the week was going over in the grocery budget. I’m hopeful gardening season will help me with this.
*I got some small rebates back from Ibotta and spent a few minutes getting Swagbucks points in hopes of getting a gift card in the near future.
