The Christmas Challenge. Keep a note book.

We have almost reached the end of our first month! Typically I think January is a busy time. Here it is warm, school holidays and a fairly relaxed month. So if you managed to get started on some presents for your supplies or even keep up with Birthdays then you did well!

My aims for January were to review my supplies and try and plan ways to use these things up during the challenge. Also to think about what I have available to me that could be used for present making. I came up with quite a bit on that list... Bay Leaves from the farm plus lavender, honey also from the farm. Lemons from my friends tree...

Next was to look for ideas that I think I can do, are new, and will suit someone on my list. This bit I did well on! I have a seriously long list of things I really can't wait to make.

Finally to get started! To be working on things and even finish some things.
And I did! I will get to that in a minute!

From the beginning I said it is important to keep a note book. You can have great ideas and with everything else in life they are forgotten. I see things all the time and where possible I take a photo. Also I use Pinterest and have a file called "future projects" so that at least if it is on the internet I can put it on my board and later it is there when I need a jolt. Plus the link and the instructions are there. This is truly so helpful.

In my notebook I keep FBI type notes on people. I have names along with the colour of their kitchen and bath room, favourite colours and any detail that might be helpful. This list is very handy! When I hear something in conversation that is some kind of clue I write it down.
A while back at my daughters she had made a lovely desert. She said she was short on desert forks. So when I came home I wrote "desert forks" next to her name in my book. We hear clues and by Christmas we forget. (or I do) If someone is making jam I note that. It means I could give them labels or jam tops... and so on. If I know they make cards or another craft that is a great peace of information full of gift ideas! If I did't write this all down I would be hopeless!

So now is a good time to start keeping notes. By the end of February, if you are anything like me, some ideas will be lost.

My actual progress this week was I finished some hankies. The first couple took a while as I had just learned to do a hand rolled hem. I am really pleased though and am getting faster at it. I have large cellophane bags and they are packaged folded in quarters. They are a larger sized hankie.

I have really loved learning a new skill too.

I also found more microfibre for my planned face cleaning cloths and eye make up remover pads. This is lovely super soft fabric sold as face washers in Spotlight...

So now I am set to make another gift. The ones I am copying were about $150 for the set. They will cost only a couple of dollars a set to make!

Looking in our local florist I saw another very easy to copy idea and took photos to remind myself. I have these exact same succulents growing and multiplying in my garden!

They were only in plastic pots and it was all in the wrapping. They did look lovely. Once again it is all presentation!

When I was at IKEA I grabbed some soap pump bottles. I had in mind to use them as gifts as I had left over pink liquid soap from an earlier bubble bath making project.  I filled them up and added a rose decal. I am keeping one in the kitchen and the others will be gifts.

Also I got one plain white one and online I ordered a deer decal. I was only a couple of dollars. This will go in a gift for my brothers household as he loves deer.

So I have a few things made, a lot of things started and planned! I have a lot of hankies cut out and the cellophane bags to package them and the fabric I need to make the cleansing cloths. And ideas! So that is an ok start for January!

I got a lovely letter from Jen. I want to share this as it great! Jen said she decided to learn to crochet! She said she put it off for ages then went to You Tube and watched a lesson and learned to make a granny square.  She said it surprised her how easy it was to learn that way! Then she followed a tutorial by Bella Coco on how to make a straight row granny pattern and began a rug which is for a present for her daughter.

This is where she was up to when she wrote during the week...

It looks amazing! Jen said she loves the teacher Bella Coco so I went and looked for her. Oh my goodness now I have new things planned and new stitches to learn. She does a pom pom edging... I am learning that!  Thank you Jen! I am planning to get super soft fleecy or minky fabric and doing a crochet pom pom edging around that. I'm so excited to start it!
So what this means is if you want to learn to crochet this time next week you could be up and running and making something. You just have to take that first step and it is so much fun!

Thank you Jen for writing and I think your crochet looks gorgeous and your daughter will love this so much!  It is fun. Working on something is wonderful and learning a new skill is fantastic.

So now over to you! Next week is Show and Tell for January's crafts and presents made. Things don't have to be complete, you could show me something underway as Jen has and do progress reports! Last years Show and Tells were amazing and inspiring. We got ideas from each other which was great.

You can send photos to me directly at brinkzi21@hotmail.com or post them to the Bluebirds Facebook page as comments let you post pics.  You are also welcome to post a picture of supplies if you are looking for ideas of what to make with them as we will all come up with ideas for sure!

It feels really good to have made progress in January and to have ideas and new skills to learn. After looking at the projects Bella Coco has I have heaps of "next thing I want to learn" ideas on my list. There are not enough hours in the day!  I know when winter comes I will get a lot more crochet done as we are indoors much more and having projects is so nice then. Some of you are in that situation now with snow and ice outside!

How did you go this week? If you are thinking of starting something or learning something make this your week to do it! xxx

  1. Annabel, I love the FBI idea ... it made me chuckle when I read it. I've been teaching myself to crochet as well and finally feel comfortable enough to tackle my first official project. I'm going to go check out Bella Coco, maybe I'll find something there for my first project. The rug is beautiful by the way. I am anxiously awaiting show and tell.

    1. Dear Patsy, Collecting data is very handy when making gifts! Truly it helps a lot. From my data I think you have a black and white kitchen, like labels and jars, fabric and patterns.... except I am not 100% sure on the kitchen colours... so you can help me out on that!
I am really loving Bella Coco. I have already got some photos in for show and tell! With love, Annabel.xxx

    2. Annabel, you are very observant! My kitchen colors are black, white and light brown/beige/tan and you are spot on on the labels, jars, fabric and patterns! Good detective work there!

  2. Okay, I hit publish before I was ready! The hankies are beautiful, what kind of fabric did you make them out of? The liquid soap looks so pretty and the white one with the deer is perfect for a masculine look. I am anxious to see your face cleansing cloths and eye makeup removers. Such good ideas.

  3. Annabel, florists are one of the BEST places to scout for ideas that cost next to nothing 'in real life', aren't they? I'm fascinated with the microfibre cloth idea...must check back on the post where you mentioned it. Lovely work Jen on the crochet. That looks so sunny and happy! I've been making your Hollywood Bubble Bath, which has been a huge hit, adding a silk flower to the bottle, and a real crystal drop to the neck of the bottle as embellishment. Thankyou for that idea as it went to three different sixteen year olds in the last week and was a huge success! I can see many more in the making! I just ordered some candle making supplies and I'm going to try my hand at turning thrifted cut glass sugar bowls, into bespoke candles in pastel colours. I remember making candles in plastic cups as a teenager, so it can't be that hard. My daughter and I have been crocheting hearts and knitting stone coloured rugs like there's no tomorrow for Valentines Day and upcoming mens birthdays. So far, I reckon we've generated several hundred dollars worth of gifts in terms of equivalent retail value! The next task is to teach ourselves to cable knit. Again, I did this as a teen and it was remarkably easy. All the upmarket homewares stores carry cable knit throw rugs, so I think that's a good skill to master. I'm loving your Christmas Challenge. Thankyou! Mimi xxx

    1. Dear Mimi,
Have a look on the Enjo website at the personal things there is a set of two body wash miss and a container of round disks for makeup removal. The set is about $150. yes. It is just microfibre for petes sake. But I love the disks and microfibre is very good for makeup removal and I also love the look and the idea! Mum was given them... and they feel divine and luxurious. So I am making sets for gifts! Stay tuned...
You inspired me to make another r big batch of bubble bath. Lucy has taken to baths since being pregnant and I will make her some also. I love a bath. Again luxury but costs very little!
I love the crochet hearts! this has taken off and thank you for that pattern!
Lynette can cable knit. She is a wonderful knitter! And I love the look too in the throws and chunky rugs. Gorgeous and a good winter project! There are so many projects not enough time! Many thanks! With love Annabel.xxxx

    2. Mimi we must get together soon and share some crafting skills and ideas.

I have just had a vision of some yarn that I have in storage - I think some is knitted up but it is easy enough to unpick (fingers crossed because from memory this yarn was 'bobbly' and a bit on the rough side) - it would be perfect for a throw for our 'cold frog' daughter.

When we lived in Sydney I use to walk past the most wonderful florist when I did my shopping - very much like what Annabel showed us. I would often stand and look in the window drooling over the displays. We have no florist where we are and the others I have come across have been very basic.

  6. Dear Annabel, thank you so much for another excellent blog post. You have had a great week. The hankies look beautiful I love them, and I think I will have to borrow your idea and try to make some. I have been making cards and sorting through my craft supplies making a list of what I can make. I have a wide variety of craft materials to use too. It is great to get ideas from other people and from gift shops also. I have seen decorated notebooks like you do Annabel ( but not as nice as yours) for $20 or more and that is a small to medium notebook. I see handmade cards ( like some of us who comment make and as also make Annabel and Me and I know Wendy does too) in shops for anywhere up to $15 each , I can make 30 or more cards for that price!. I am using my craft supplies to put together craft and card making packs for my nieces and for my mum.i will make a set of my cards for my Gran for Mother's Day and include some concession stamps ( when I get some) and a nice pen. Other ideas I have are to crochet or knit when I learn dish and wash clothes ( seperate ones for each) .i will put wash cloths with a wrapped dove soap. I am getting lots if inspiration here and from a few other blogs I follow. I will be interested to see the make up cloths etc as I would like to make some too. Thanks again Annabel love Barb

  7. Beautiful work Miss Annabel. Not only beautiful but inspirational as well. I have my notebook and am collecting many ideas. My sister is a keen gardener and in a phone chat mentioned how, yet again, she had put her snips down and couldn't find them. This gave me the idea if makng her a gardening apron, so she can put her snips and bits in pockets in the apron, rather than misplacing them. Have been on Pinterest and have found lots of ideas for useful aprons. This week I finished crocheting my Call the Midwife baby blanket for the Grandbub. I'll put a photo of this, along with a few other things made on the FB page. Looking forward to Show and Tell.

  15. I keep a notebook in my purse that I write gifts that I have for each person as the year goes on. I am completely able to end up with 2-3 times the needed gifts for each grandchild because they are so much fun to do for. I try to buy toys for them at 50% or more off the regular price. This week I bought a fun sink that uses real water with a pump faucet to wash dishes for our granddaughter's 2nd birthday in June. It will be a fun outdoor toy for summer and she will love it.

I know it is not what you mean about learning something new but I am learning to play the violin. I have wanted to play since I was 8 years old and at 55 here I am learning at last. I have succulents that need to be cut back so I need to learn to root them and make new plants. I have lots of pots in my garage and often find small clay pots at thrift shops for 25 cents.

Your handkerchiefs are lovely. Hand rolled hems are so lovely and sets your hankies apart from a store bought gift for sure.

    1. Dear Lana,
The violin! That is wonderful. And no small effort either.
There seems to be nothing much to getting succulents started, I just cut them off and nestle them into a pot of dirt and water a bit. They seem to almost always take! When you see the prices in the store and realise this it is a great way to have spare gifts.
Thanks so much Lana. With love Annabel.xxx

  16. I've been inspired to gather ideas for children's gifts. This is where I spend most of my money and it's hard sometimes to come up with good ideas that the children like. My best idea to date is to make personalized superhero capes. I make them in small, medium and large. They are universally loved by the children. I add embroidered "Super {kid's name}".

So, I have been writing down ideas like that one that work really well.

I found a beautiful pillow case at the thrift store last week and cut it up into beautiful napkins and hankies. I ended up with 7 lovely napkins and 4 hankies that will be so beautiful with a little cross stitched butterfly in the corner. I thought I could use the beautiful napkins in a package with a girl's "tea set." I have done something like this before, too. It was pretty successful. I just bought some china from a thrift store before. This time, I think I'll have the little napkins and 4 tea cups with saucers. Some little friend of my girls will love that one. The usually like the real china things better than plastic imitations. And if they break it, it's really no big deal because I bought it for a song anyway.

I also love your idea of a tea set and napkins. I do hope you will send me photos as this all sounds so nice!
I have found lovely china in thrift stores although not recently so much. But I always watch out for lovely bone china and florals etc.
The superhero capes are brilliant I can imagine how much fun they would be.

I did infinity ones that go around twice... and Mum did some that had a knot in them that were lovely. I am planning more this year. 19. Annabel,

My daughter taught me to crochet at Christmastime. As I live on Guam part-time and in the Philippines part-time out in the Pacific Ocean, we need no blankets (or rugs as you Australians call them :). I am only interested in edging things with crochet: my vintage hankies, the white terry cloth dishcloths (face cloths) I love (can be bleached white as snow again!), pennants I make into buntings from vintage bed sheets, even giftwrap paper, stationery and envelopes can be crocheted. Yes, I've been bitten by the crochet bug-- IT IS CONTAGIOUS!

As we are traveling on the US mainland presently, I'll have to share all my gift goodies next month (my cross stitched one-of-a-kind anniversary ornaments, my embroidered greeting cards and all my crochet), my dear Annabel. I no longer blog at Kelley Highway.

For years I have used my phone to record FBI notes about people: clothing and shoe sizes, birthday, favorite colors, favorite stores for gift cards, favorite dessert or candy, and also what I have given them before, when, and their response at receiving it, etc. Everywhere my phone goes, my notes go, too. No worries about taking a notebook along.

Lots of good ideas! I have a large, 3 ring notebook that I am using for the Vicky Challenge, as well as grocery and meal planning. I have a section in it for Christmas ideas like your FBI notes. That's where I am keeping project ideas for the Christmas Challenge, too. Something that has helped me is to keep a record of what I gave and received the previous years. That helps me avoid duplication of things that it wouldn't be good to duplicate and also a record of things people would enjoy more of.

  24. Dear Annabel,

    What beautiful hankies!

We saved quite a bit this week on purchases. John used several coupons along with a sale at Penney's so saved $66.40 on those items. I went to pick up a few items at the fabric store, so the sale & coupon saved me $42.90, and I ended up only spending $24.44. We were also given a free pie voucher from Perkins and received a reusable Perkins coupon for 20% all meals we eat there until March 6.

John went grocery shopping and found some excellent bargains on items we eat regularly and stock in food storage, so he purchased quite a few of those. Some of the items were over $1.25 less than at another store for exactly the same item.

    Have a great weekend.

    Love and hugs,
    Glenda
