The Christmas Challenge. Crochet edgings.

We have lots of signs of spring! Today is just beautiful! It is so bright and beautiful I instantly feel more energetic.

I have added quite a lot to my present cupboard. Some things I've made plus some bargains.  I have got to the point where I am getting excited to get it all out and be wrapping! But I need to hold off for a few months yet!

Over winter I did a lot of crochet and many rugs. I hope to give some of these to charity at the beginning of next winter plus several are baby presents for babies on the way. During the challenge I had a couple of people say that they have no one to give their handmade work to. So give to charity and the needy is my answer to that.

Now I am changing to working edges on towels, bathmats, hand towels and face washers.  We are working towards a new bathroom so some are my new bathroom glory box items!  Lots will be gifts.
Tomorrow I am having a friend come over for the afternoon as she is wanting to learn edgings and can already crochet. This is so easy to do and transforms things.

I would like to do across the fold down of a sheet. Lots of times I have worked around the edge of pillowcases. So much to do... not enough days!

This is just a good way to take regular things and make them over. Like the old tablecloth Rosanne cut up into kitchen towels and worked a crochet edge on. So inexpensive and such an amazing result. Other possibilities are hankies, serviettes, tablecloths, scarves, blankets, baby socks ...  curtains!

Here I have added embroidery in one corner. I did a muslim face cloth (could also be a baby wash cloth), a hand towel and a face washer. As I have soap in my present cupboard I will match soap up to these. I also made powered puffs so these all kind of go together which is good!

I did whole sets so there is a bathmat as well...

I have a few white sets to go then I have a pale blue set with blue cotton.  Watching the Olympic Games has meant I have got quite a bit of crochet done!

These are good sized projects to take away on holidays, do in the car etc.  Kitchen towels are lovely as well. If you know someones bathroom or kitchen colours you are set!

I might try and do a tutorial but it would be the blind leading the blind since I don't read patterns or speak crochet language!  To get a frill I work three double crochet into each chain space... if that is any help!

Grub roses are the handiest skill to know and very easy to learn. That is fiddly to show but if you like them please promise to learn. Try you tube. Once you have done one you can churn them out as they only take a few minutes each! Plus once you know you can use the same stitches to make little bees, bunnies and various other things. It is so much fun to learn and so handy!  I had to brush up my skills again to start embroidering for the baby. But it didn't take long to get back into it.

Which leads me too...

Lucy is expecting another baby! Our whole family is so excited! My fingers will be worn to the bone from embroidery now!
If anyone would pray for her as she is suffering terrible migraines to the extent that finally the Doctor sent her to a neurologist. He thinks he can help her but not while she is pregnant as none of the drugs are safe for pregnancy. She is having two migraines a week and only one or two days a week without a headache.  I used to be like it and so was my Mum. We both have improved with age and get less. When the girls were little the local Doctor would come to my house after the surgery closed to give me an injection. It was terrible! So it makes me feel sick as I know what it is like.  She had a couple of good weeks and this week has migraines again.
Thank you.

I hope your week is going well! I want to soak up some of this sunshine. Each day I am doing a few things in the garden.

What are you working on for your gift cupboard and current presents?  Do you change crafts as the season changes?
As the year goes on all this work is really adding up! xxx

  1. Give Lucy our best wishes and big congratulations on the new bub. I do so hope her migraines settle down.
As we travel I am working on my single bed sized blanket. I'm about half way through the project and this rug keeps me quite warm as I crochet away. We are currently at my sisters, half way between Bathurst and Orange. It's cold here so a warm blanket is a requirement for this tropical woman.
    Life s good.

  2. Oh Annabel, how exciting - another baby for Lucy!! I am sorry she is suffering so much. That would be so very trying for you all, especially her xx I hope the neurologist will be able to help her find some relief.
I love your crochet so much, it is just so beautiful!
Spring is certainly on it's way here as well. I have freesias just starting to flower in my garden, and there is a Jasmine that I walk past also just flowering. My magnolia seems to flower long after everyone else's has started, so it will be a while before I see that. But at least there are plenty of buds. Oh, how I love Spring xx Fiona

  3. Dear Annabel,
I am so excited Lucy is pregnant! This is wonderful. The baby will be so blessed to have you as a grandma. I can imagine you have been thinking of all sorts of lovely things to make for the baby! And Harper will have a sibling! I am sorry to hear of Lucy's migraines, though. She is in my prayers, as are the baby and her husband. I know you are a help to her and I'm sure she really appreciates that.
Annabel, your towels are gorgeous. I have been going through your craft section of the blog again and I'm so inspired by your work. I want to make everything, lol! It has been raining here the past couple of days so I have spent some time at my crafting desk. But I can't tell you what I have been doing, you'll just have to wait and see ;)
I hope your week is going well. Enjoy your beautiful weather!

    1. Thank you so much. I worked out that between Mum, Myself and Lucy (Chloes doesn't get them) we have 130 years of experience in migraines. Thats a depressing statistic! In all those years we have tried about everything. And in all the inventions and technology etc you would think there was something! It seems ridiculous. Pregnancy is probably what is making thing harder just now as she can't take anything. With thanks, love Annabel.xxx

  6. Hello Annabel,
    Congratulations on the new baby.
I can empathise with the migraines. I wonder if she could look into magnesium supplements. I'm not sure if they are ok during pregnancy as i didn't know about magnesium when i was pregnant. I have found magnesium to be almost miraculous and my migraines were also hormone triggered.

    1. Dear Garden Del,
      Thank you so much!
I take magnesium. I discovered it just a few years ago and it is very good for me. I used to get restless legs which drove me mad and it fixed it! I think it has helped my headaches too. Lucy takes it and now they are doing a test as they think for some reason she doesn't absorb it... so looking into that.
And yes... hormones are a trigger for sure. I am sorry you've been a sufferer but glad things are better. People who have had migraines understand... it is not just a headache it is so much worse!
      Many thanks! Love Annabel.xxx

Love the frilly edge on the towels, and thankyou for the instructions.
I tend to sew all year round (just use different fabrics according to season), while I find I can only crochet, knit or embroider in cooler weather as my hands seem to get too sweaty when the weather is warm.

  8. What lovely news Annabel, how very exciting! Poor Lucy, that is a very nasty thing to be dealing with. I hope she improves during her pregnancy, and the neurologist is able to help her afterwards. How wonderful she has such a supportive family to help her.

You must be very grateful for all the gifts you have put away already, you will be able to spend plenty of time making baby gifts for your new grandchild :)

I am on the last side of the border of the crochet blanket I have made for a friend who is pregnant, and I have a feeling I will run out of yarn before I get to the end. This project was made with yarn I bought but didn't use for the rainbow blanket I made, so I really am hoping to not have to purchase another ball! Though if I do I could make a more interesting border than the very simple single crochet border I have had to do because of a lack of yarn. So I guess either way will be ok. I will know within an hour or so lol.

Best wishes to Lucy and your family

  9. Congratulations how wonderful a little one. Migraines are horrible. I will pray for Lucy. They run in our family too.
perfume any fragrance like smelly fabric softner and laundry
soap will trigger mine. I keep pepermint in my purse in
case someone is wearing fragrance or smoking if I catch it early I can stop it. Not sure if it would be safe for Lucy
during pregnancy. I also use a magnesium lotion by ancient minerals. It helps some. Massage is very helpful for migraines. The heat also triggers my Migraines and hormones.
Some pressure points help too. You can google those. Chiropractic helps if they are used to working with migraine
patients. I love your towels just beautiful.

Your face washers and towels are gorgeous. I have been offline for some time, however I am still making the quilt. Also I have another smaller one almost finished. My late husband suffered daily from cluster migraines. I remember seeing the shocking pain on his face. He frequently used a cold face washer to give some help with the pain. You probably already know that tho.

  12. Hi Annabel

What wonderful news for your Dear Family. Congratulations
Poor Lucy, I know how she feels.....it is not pleasant. I was like her regularly suffering migraines from an early age and constantly with a headache. Only over the past 12 months have I been taking something that has helped me have fewer migraines but unfortunately it does make me drowsy so must be taken at night.....No help for poor Lucy when she will be up at night.

One thing that did help for some time (especially when I was pregnant) was to put my feet in hot water as hot as I could stand up to the ankles and then putting a ice cold compress on my forehead.....this shocks the system into restoring the correct blood flow. I find that my migraines are mostly related to my neck and shoulders and find that a good massage can help.......just remember if done professionally she needs to mention being pregnant so they do not use incorrect oils on her.

We have a family history of migraines, Nana, Mum and myself and from time to time my Brother. Really hoping DD6 misses out on them.

At the moment I am working on some wooden door signs for DD6 for Christmas as well as one for a friend of her's who has a birthday in September. Just started doing the undercoat today on them. Pre purchased from hardware or craft shops.

Love the handiwork that you have posted, they look great.

Congratulations to you and your family. I join my prayers with yours in finding a solution to Lucy's migraines, as well as for her husband and Harper.

Your crochet work is so beautiful and since the crochet bug has bitten me I'll be sure also watch the rose tutorial on youtube. I was wondering how you decide to space each beginning stitch around?
By sight on the photos it seemed to be 1/4 to 1/2 inch spacing but I wasn't sure. Also, what weight yarns and hooks do you use for different projects? I'm just a novice when it comes to crochet and have much more experience with knitting.

Right now I'm finishing up sewing down a binding of a quilt for a wedding gift, and making necklaces and bracelets using scrap pieces of fabric, marbles, embroidery thread, and clothesline. Nothing needed to be purchased to make these as all things were in my supply closet. I will also be making a fair amount of peach jam, as there are 30 pounds of peaches sitting in the kitchen that need to be handled is the next couple of days. There will be peaches that will be canned and those that will be frozen, some that will be made into cobbler's, pies and coffee cakes.

You are so right about donating the work of our hands to charity. I participate in small groups that make quilts for veterans hospitals, battered women's shelters, baby quilts for crisis pregnancy centers, also quilts that are carried in police cruisers and fire trucks for children who may need to be removed from their home because of domestic violence, knitted items for children in very indigent areas that may have no warm caps, scarves and mittens. The groups have found that donations need not be large or costly, but the light it produces in the recipients eyes because someone cared for them is priceless. Wishing everyone a beautiful and productive day. Cookie

You are seriously creative and artistic. I can't wait to show everyone your baskets and quilts. I love that you use recycled materials.
I also love that you work for charity. That is beautiful. Also items can be used in other ways i.e. raffle prize etc but I think the gift of something handmade shows love too. As you say that item can mean a lot. Well done Cookie. We can all do more. There are so many needs. With lots of love, Annabel.xxx

  15. Dear Annabel,

I never used to get headaches at all, then about 10 years ago I started getting terrible migraines, sometimes up to a few times a week! I started to take some magnesium for other reasons, and I don't know if they were connected, but I haven't had a migraine in months!!! You mentioned taking magnesium for restless leg syndrome...did your headaches lessen, too? Just a thought, as I have been so thankful to have mine at bay... I feel so sorry for Lucy!!

Your crochet and embroidery is awe inspiring, as usual! I have just finished the knitting of a big project, so I need to block and darn in ends and then it can go in the gift tub.

In your last post you mentioned sinking whole potatoes into your crock pot mix as it's cooking, and I thought "Duh!! I never thought of that!" So yesterday while a stewing bird was cooking in the crockpot (and I always cook them with lots of water and some veggies to get chicken stock at the same time), I tried your idea for the last hour or so...they were essentially boiled potatoes in chicken broth and they were amazing!! Thanks for the idea.

    xx Jen in NS

Oh! I haven't read all the comments but I just looked up to see Garden Del mentioning magnesium...I hope this could work for Lucy, too!!

    1. Dear Jen,
I think its highly likely the magnesium has helped. Yes... I have had a big improvement in recent years in migraines and it co insides with taking the magnesium for my legs. So it helped both a lot.
The darning in the ends is the worst bit! But once that is done you have another big project complete!
Ah yes... for stock you want water... I think thats a good idea to make two things at once! If my crockpot has the room adding the potatoes or something extra is really handy. Our potatoes I split open and added sour cream then the casserole... the rest was pie filling. But its an extra meal and different. Another is adding extra chicken to the stock and then you have poached chicken for sandwiches etc.
Oh I thought I will mention... if I am cooking a casserole and it is too much liquid the potato works to both soak up some and have a good flavour but I also sometimes add rice in one corner... then that soaks up a heap of liquid and is yummy! Because there is a lot of goodness in that liquid!
Many thanks Jen. Have a lovely weekend! With love Annabel.xxx

  18. Oh how wonderful about Lucy's news of a new baby! I am so sorry to hear of her migraines though. I suffer migraines, though not as often as when I was younger. I hope the neurologist can help with something natural that is safe for use during pregnancy.

Your towels are lovely! I want to learn those make the gorgeous roses to add to my pillowcases! I have pulled out that terry tablecloth I had spoken about and I am ready to get my scissors out and cut it into hand towel lengths. I am also plugging along on my lace scarf. I am about 1/3 finished with it and about 3/4 finished with my afghan. I need to get myself moving so I have more gifts for my cupboard. Unfortunately, working full time doesn't leave me with a lot of available time to craft.

I don't think I had mentioned it before but in the things we bought from the auction there is some very nice Shetland wool in two colors, black and gold. I am excited to have my knitting friends in my group tell me how many yards they think I have (one hank of each color has a band on it giving the weight), so that I can decide what to make with these treasures!

How lovely it is for a whole family to be so warmly anticipating the birth of a new baby! May the Eternal's ways be carried down to this new person, and may Lucy be able to cherish this blessing without the sorrow of migraines.

I have found the gentle magnesium oil applied to my neck quite useful, in regard to nasty headaches. This is a different way to absorb the magnesium. It gave my neck a light, warm, relaxed feeling. I would gladly add Lucy's neck to my massage list - after my husband and the dog! There are answers for everything. May you find them for migraines. (Even gently nourishing the bowels might help.)

  25. Dear Annabel,

Wow what wonderful news for your family! Congratulations to all. I hope that the migraines settle down for Lucy so she can enjoy her pregnancy. Sounds like they may be hormone related.

I am working on a crochet blanket for my eldest daughter in the colours she likes. They are similar colours the one you made recently in greys, browns, creams and blue. It is looking good so far.

The weather has been very warm, but now I hear rain drops on the roof as I am writing this. Rain is good, especially after the horrible windy day today!

I have been quiet around here with a few little hiccups happening with my family. I will drop you an email very soon. Along with that I have been Spring cleaning, I am trying to get ahead before it starts :)

I will remember Lucy in my prayers,

    With lots of love,
    Tania xx

    1. Dear Tania,
      Thank you so much!
Your daughter has the same colour loves as me! That sounds lovely!
We got a really good downpour so I hope it turned into a good rain for you! We had a lot of wind as well.
I hope everything is ok... I was thinking of you as you were very quiet... it sounds like you have had a few things to deal with. I hope everything is ok (and everyone).
Thank you for your prayers I appreciate that very much. With love Annabel.xxx

  26. Hi again, Annabel! Just aa quick clarification, my daughter said that besides staying hydrated, she can sometimes stop a migraine by drinking plenty of water when she first feels one coming on. I am hoping and praying that the doctors and some of the tips given in the comments will provide some help for Lucy. Love, Elaine

  27. Dear Annabel, oh that is the best news that Lucy is having another baby. I am so excited for her! I feel like jumping for joy. I bet the baby will be super cute, just like his/her big sister Harper. I am sad to hear Lucy has been so unwell. Those migraines sound absolutely awful! For anyone they would debilitating, but to be pregnant and have a toddler, it would make it even harder. I really hope the Neurologist can come up with something she can do/take that is natural. I will keep her in my prayers.
Your crochet work is magnificent and adds such beauty (and luxury) to the every day. It was such a pleasure to be looking at your work. I would so love a tutorial on crocheting and also crocheting those cleaning cloths (they are the best).
Sending you and your family love. Love, Bridge

  28. Hi Annabel, congratulations on the new baby. I am also a migraine sufferer and it is tough at the best of times, let alone when you are pregnant and can't take anything. For years I tried cold compresses, and finally an older lady who was a nurse advised me to use hot compresses/wheat packs. Sounded like the last thing I would want to do add heat. But she explained that the heat acts open the blood vessels (vasodilation) and improve blood flow. Went home and tried it on the back of my neck and base of my skull which I where my pain stems from and it worked like a charm. I have never looked back. Just thought I would mention as a safe treatment during pregnancy. Keeping you all in my prayers. Lisa

  30. I too used to get migraines but my cardiologist found I had a pfo (a hole in part of my heart). They fixed that and no more migraines. Unfortunately pregnancy hormones won't be helping your precious angel so I pray that things improve for her real soon.
